The awesome and very generous people from Group’s National Youth Ministry Conference have given us two free conference registrations to give away. So we are having a sweet contest!

Over the next two weeks we want to see your best show ideas for the Who Are These Guys Podcast. We will pick the best two, and if your idea is picked you not only get a free registration, you get to help host the show that you came up with!

Granted, hosting the podcast won’t make you very famous, but at least our mother’s will have something to listen to…

x ways to put out fires in youth ministry.

okay so yesterday i suggested top 5 influential youth pastors in the last generation and why but after some more thought maybe it’s just the top five student ministry movements and why.

that’s my shot at the episode suggestion

I think that you should talk about how to last in youth ministry. Many youth ministers are leaving the ministry. Give some pointers on how to find the right church, what questions to ask the church. What to look for in a church. How to make it longer than two years in one church. This would be a great talk and helpful to young and old ministers

  6. Jason Sansbury on August 21st, 2007 9:04 am

Can my convention idea qualify for one? I mean, you did do a show on it…

    Other ideas:
    1. The value of mentors: finding and being one
    2. The necessity of connecting with other local youth workers and ways to facilitate that.

  7. ChrisW on August 21st, 2007 8:48 pm

Here are some ideas in no particular order. How about bonus points for the most submitted.

-Ways to bridge the gap between youth ministry and church body.
-Ways to pull off big events in a small youth ministry.
    -Ways to stimulate numerical growth.
-Ways to protect yourself from spiritual burnout.
-Ways to stay involved with other ministries apart from youth ministry.
-Ways to balance ministry, family, and a full time job.
-Ways to share the Gospel with teens. Approaches to evangelism.
-Ways to build student leadership. (Already mentioned)
-How to handle a change in Senior Pastor.
-Ways to cut down on the number of hats you wear at church.

    The Free Show.

GREAT ministry doesn’t have to have a Mega-Church budget (What exactly was Jesus’ budget?). But most churches (which are small) look to the Mega-churches as example of what they should be doing . . . not true.

    1) Really cool relational ministry ideas that don’t cost anything (I might have to qualify “free” to mean look around at what people have and use that rather than spend budge money. ex - we can’t buy an Xbox, but who cares, our students already own them, and we do have a projector :) , families with pools, etc.)

    2) Super Software: you’ve mentioned some, but I’ve also used free PDF converters to post downloadable online forms, and a desktop image capturing program to make a video to help walk parents through how to use rss, Google calendar, etc., (the video’s may sound like a waist of time, but I run a gazillion programs and the Google calendar has simplified my life, so I’m trying to get parents on board.)

    3) The best Bible study we’ve ever done, didn’t have questions or any kind of curriculum; We used Mark Yaconelli’s version of Lection Divina (www.ymsp.org/resources/practices/lectio_divina.html

    My show idea:

6 Essential Practices for Saying “No” in Ministry (I actually do have six… I can post these, too, if you like….)

  12. Matthew McNutt on August 25th, 2007 6:37 pm

Here are the ideas that popped into my mind right away …
    * Small town/rural town youth ministry; keys to starting right and lasting in small town America (it’s VERY different than big city/coorparate America).
    * Dealing with competitive youth ministries; how do you handle the youth pastor in your region who views himself in competition with you? Goes after your teens, criticizes your methods, etc.
    * My personal favorite; what, if any, should be the youth ministry response to youth obesity? Currently over 30% of kids are overweight; by 2010 the number will be close to 50%. Already, kids lifespans are shorter than their parents because of this. As ministers to young people do we have a role to play in this ever growing crisis?

    1. top five ways to use the internet for ministry - you could share what you guys think are the best ways and tips on how to do it. for example blogging, creating your own website (i use iWeb - http://www.elementyouth.tv), facebook, youtube, constant contact (email), pod-cast.
    2. ways to network with other youth ministries to have a greater impact on your city
    3. how to start a campus ministry or how the youth ministry can serve local schools
    4. do’s and don’t of a summer camp, mission trip, or retreat. i know a lot of people do fall retreats maybe tips on planning one and what to do at it - seeing that it’s fall and everything
    5. how to create a youth ministry that is appealing to the unchurched - where churched kids want to invite their unchurched friends and those friends actually want to come back
    6. Top youth ministry resources that you could not live without
    7. How to start a youth ministry from scratch (that is what I am currently doing)
    8. How to stay culturally relevant - maybe some resources that you guys use to stay up to speed with youth culture
    9. How to stay in top physical condition
    10. How to reserve your copy of Halo 3
    11. What to do when you want to strangle one of your jr. high students

Hope this sparks some ideas. The last 3 I just put down to beat out that other guy that had 10.

You guys are amazing, wow. It is going to be hard to decide!!!

Hey, I would really like to know 5 ways (other than worship) to grow a diverse ministry or be a diverse ministry.

    The Re-Formated Faith Show

Billy Graham said something to the effect that he wished he had spent more time reading the Bible for his personal growth and less time reading the Bible looking for ideas.

As ministers, where is the line between our faith and our work?

I assume most of us became full-time ministers because we were hard-core Christians, right? Choir, Youth Ministry, 5am wake-up for prayer and Bible, and maybe throw in a college campus Bible study or two.

But now everything is scrutanized. People notice everything we do. . . or at least if feels that way. Everything we used to _volunteer_ to do, we now get _paid_ to do, so how can we live out our faith without just doing our job?

For the record, I don’t think I could host this show, because I’m still struggling to find the answer.

  17. Scott on February 19th, 2008 10:30 pm

My favorite show from you guys was the “free stuff” podcast… you know the one with 10 cool free stuff to help or enhance your ministry. So my idea is similar:

    - Things you didn’t know you could use before, but now can’t live without…

    0r

    - Leading with no pants: How to lead ministry without “wearing the pants” of leadership.

The idea for the last one is more of a topic on how one shouldn’t lead passively… or something like that.

    Peace!
