The Flux Capacitor Pre-Episode #3

Finally, we get to release a new podcast! In this episode you will get to experience some of the best audio mixing and sound EVER (and by best I mean really really bad!). Apparently I was holding my nose at the beginning while Josh entered in and out of caves and was security checked by a couple of wookies. Ack!But we get a chance to talk about our American Idol finale adventure and get on a roll about connecting and enabling volunteers with opportunities in ministry.(Flux capacitor)

    “ONE POINT TWENTY-ONE J-IGOWATTS!!!!!!”

Sorry, couldn’t resist the Back to the Future Reference. One of my favorite parts of the movie and technically it should be Giga, but he says Jiga, and its hilarious.

The sound issues were not so bad. I thought that Josh was going for a Supreme Chancellor affect, but it was really fitting when you were talking about multiplication. Thinking of a scene from Wayne’s World - “And they tell 2 friends, and so on and so on.”

I am a reluctant Idol watcher. Didn’t care at all about it in Season 1, but have been sucked in since William Hung.

I liked Pirates 3, particulary those 40 minutes or so at the end as well, but I was doing all that I could to follow the different story twists. My favorite new character was Captain Teague played by none other than Keith Richards. I am looking forward to having the DVD so that I can pause and rewind to catch all of the detail. I am still finding things in the second one the point to the third.

Youth Pastors have many hats. Despite my group being very small with a weekly attendance averaging less than 10 and a volunteer staff of 2 (my wife and my brother) I still find myself stretched often. I have been fortunate to be able to focus on the students as well as my volunteers, but I have a lot of facetime with my volunteers because they are family. Every family event can be a meeting if we need to. I am slowly but surely getting them plugged in to web tools because I do a lot of my thinking and work at my regular full time job and I can create and upload documents and ideas through the Internet. They both have blogs, but do not update as regular as most bloggers. And I was able to get them on Google calendar so that we can all see our schedules and work out some details that way.

I am glad to be 25%. And I voted for the web2.0 tools. I will be thinking of some things that I would like to hear about as far as ministry and technology go.

I am glad that its back.

    Hey Tony,

If i recall, you are a mac user. what i’m wondering is how you and josh go about recording your podcast. I assume you do it in garage band. My main question is how you get josh’s voice in there.. i’m pretty sure I recall you saying that you guys were in different places when you recorded it.

I’m asking becasue I do a radio show/podcast (www.edgeradio.info) with my buddy. I’m in ontario he’s in new brunswick. Right now we use iChat, and garageband records our audio convo on 2 separate tracks, which is great, but it always seems like one of our voices is better then the other. what do you guys do?

Okay, here is our normal setup - and it actually works better when we are remote vs being in the same room.

    1. I use skype, it has a better voice quality than most and it’s abilities to accept different audio inputs and outputs is key.
    2. Audio High Jack Pro: There is a $16 and a $30 version, I don’t know the difference and I got the $30. Anyways, this program allows you to “high jack” the specific audio from any program on your computer and record it to an MP3. Very Cool!
    3. USB Headsets. This is the best investment, you can get REALLY good sound from one of the $50 ones. They usually have noise cancellation mics and all. For Josh and I, though, when we try to record in the same room it is counter productive cause we run over into each other’s mics, being loud mouths!
    4. SoundFlower: this is a free program that allows you to point the audio from programs to a single channel. I think it ends up being the element that gets rid of the echos. For instance, before I would speak into skype, but my voice would also sound and there would be an echo affect. Now, I can get rid of that. Sounds complicated, but I got all of these programs and the setup from a sweet tutorial that I can’t find now, but I am going to put a post together tonight with our setup, and how to set it up to record.
    5. Garageband. This is where I mix the two tracks of Josh and I, put in the album art and the intro, outro, etc. It works great for that!
    6. podPress: This is a plugin in Wordpress that is amazing. It creates the feed for your podcast, formats it for iTunes, gives you the flash players to embed into your posts/blog page, and is totally free. Again, i will add this process to a blog post for tonight.

    Cheers!
