I have just completed the year 4 dip and I am recharging and prepping for year 5. It is sometimes discouraging when I don’t see the results that I expect, but I know that it takes time for a vision to really take root. The biggest challenge that I face is consistent attendance. My group size is about 10, so when people do not show its a noticeable difference. When we plan an event for 10 kids and 4 show up, we sometimes have to change the event on the fly. We have become experts at creating the backup event. We have talked to the kids about what reasons might keep them from coming, but we haven’t really gotten many good reasons. I remember being their age and wanting to go to events. If I really wanted to be there, I could make it happen. Oh and part of the problem maybe that we have not been able to split HS and JHS. I am investigating that possibility all of the time. Bribery seems to work pretty well by offering food or prizes, but we only have so much that we can give away. The Budget decrease last year didn’t help either. We always get good turnout for the major events that fall into the fun and fellowship category, but lack when we do something more focused on discipleship or worship. In case you are wondering, yes we are purpose driven. My current plan for climbing out of this dip right now is to invest more time meeting with the students individually and hanging out with them in their world. I figure if I can connect with them there and maybe find out where they are at and where they are going, that maybe I can get them more involved with the group in a student leadership format. So that is my dip, but I am encouraged knowing that trials develop perseverance and perseverance must finish its work to completion(From James 1) and I love a good challenge.
